Better than the sequel December 3, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I recently purchased both of Mr O'Neill's books, and this is the better of the two. There are some very interesting tales, and the depth of the writing is far improved, but sadly for the most part it fails to get above the usual 'we are the great we are' standard fare of these type of book. Selective memory, as always, takes centre stage, and issues not to the author, or his co-authors liking, are ignored. Come on Tony...none of us is infallible.
honest for a crook November 17, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I expected this book to fail and thought it would be a typical ego charged 'big up' for o'neill. I was totally wrong. o'neill manages to recall his exploits with a refreshing honesty. Although not a member of any hooligan group, I have followed United all over. I was present during some of the incidents he covers in the book and was floored by his frankness. I read the book from front to back in one day and will go over it again in the next few days. If you follow a football team seriously, you will understand the passion, pride and straightforward way o'neill tells his story.
A Fascinating Insight into the Minds of Football 'Hooligans' September 14, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought the book having recently aquired 'Red Army General', and was not disapointed with the sequal. To delve into the inner sanctum of organised football 'warriors' and taste the adrenalin, fear (though not admitted) and planned battle field strategy sets these people apart from common criminals. It was also intriguing to have an alternative inside story of 'Operation Mars', and the resulting Crown Court trial. Excellent reading and would sell well if published in Italian (being a resident). Remove the 'blinkers'and you will not put it down.

Fellow readers will experience the adrenaline rush, the fear (though not admitted by the author),and the logistical and organisational skills of the 'pack' leaders and lieutenants. You can almost justify the need for what may appear, ordinary citizens during the week, taking part in the arranged battles with rival 'supporters', perhaps substituting for the lack of this level of confrontation required by , and inborn into most Anglo-Saxon males caused through the end of National Service and recent peaceful decades.
