Our George by Barbara Best September 13, 2008 Great book written by a family member who clearly loved him unconditionally despite the obvious problems that his illness caused. As a huge GB fan there were no real shocks or surprises except for the account of his arrival in Manchester when its alleged there were no club officials there to meet him ? Well worth a read whether you were a fan of the great man or are just curious to know more about him.
GEORGE`S BEST FRIEND February 29, 2008 Barbara Best was the sister of George, she grew up with him and this book has some amazing little anecdotes about family life. Holidays, Christmas, schooldays, the kind of things most normal people experience and although they were not exactly wealthy they had a happy childhood. She tells the story with the help of the Belfast Telegraph`s Lindy McDowell and I have to say, despite not being a fan of her writing, the story is well enough told. Barbara describes how depressed everyone was when George left to join United, and she doesn`t hold back when describing her poor mother`s subsequent descent into alcoholism. She deserves credit for facing up to this, and the chapter is a heart rending part of the book. There are some marvellous family photos and some poignant letters home. She reproduces these and recalls how much they meant to the family, even though George filled them up with references to `watching Brazil v West Germany` or asking `Did you see Pele`s goal?` I am sure Mrs. Best paid a lot of attention to that. Barbara admits she and George drifted apart for quite a big chunk of their lives but she more than made up for lost time, aided by her husband. She describes George`s final days and untimely death and goes into great detail about the magnificent send-off he had from all sorts. There is no doubting her loyalty to and love for George, and this, allied to her basic decency, reflects well on her and all the family. A wonderful read.
A must for any true George Best fan. February 11, 2008 I always look at what other people rate an item in Amazon before i decide to buy and i was not disappointed with my choice again. Thia gives an excellent angle on George Best's life that no other Best book i have read before has done. Having family members give their aspect of his life and how it affected people close to George is excellent. I could not put this book down after just reading a few pages.
This is a must for any true George Best fan................!
